Assignments
The Canvas LMS (Learning Management System) facilities the creation, management and distribution of assignment activities using its fully integrated tools. Canvas supports effective assessment for learning and provides many features and benefits, including:
- Increased time-on-task with an efficient way to view and submit assignments
- Easier implementation of alternative assessment techniques such as case studies, problem-based learning exercises, essays, research papers and group projects
- Promotion of active learning by requiring learners to analyse, synthesise, and evaluate course content
- Rubrics and examples as part of the assignment to let learners know how they will be evaluated
- Use of an iterative review process between learners and instructors
Best Practices
You should provide clear and concise information about how the assignment ties into the goals and objectives for your course. Detailed instructions should be included to ensure that all students know exactly what is expected of them. This should include:
- Required length or size of submission
- Suggested resources
- Preference for source citation, such as MLA, APA and CBE
- A model or example of a successful assignment
- Submission deadlines
- File formats: .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx and .pdf
- How the assignment is completed — individually or in groups
- How to submit work
- How and when feedback is available
- Grading criteria and/or a rubric
